Communication was poor, a simple case was badly mismanaged, dragged out, and deadlines were missed, including failing to appear in court on time.

As a legal-aid criminal law firm, tight funding and staffing may affect performance, but our experience showed a serious lack of organisation and accountability.

It’s worth noting that legal-aid solicitors often face very challenging conditions. Many rely heavily on government funding to stay in business, which can create resource shortages, high caseloads, and performance issues. While funding constraints are understandable, in our experience this firm’s handling of the case showed a level of mismanagement and poor communication that went far beyond what should be acceptable.

My experience with MK Law Solicitors was extremely poor and caused unnecessary stress over an already serious criminal matter.

Over 18 months, my case was handled by four trainees: Mia, Terisa, Lauryn and Rebecca. At no stage did I have consistent oversight from a qualified solicitor, despite initial assurances from Oliver Dean that I would receive proper representation.

Mia built a defence strategy around my second charge while failing to properly review my medical records, the firm had access to them from day one, and they contained clear proof of my innocence. Instead of identifying this, I was asked to gather excessive and unnecessary additional material for nearly a year. The key evidence was there from the start. It was simply not reviewed.

When I raised concerns about the handling of my case to Oliver Dean, I felt dismissed. I was swiftly reassigned to Terisa, who repeatedly defended Mia’s work and insisted I continue including her in email correspondence despite the breakdown in trust. This was unprofessional. Internal supervision issues should not be placed on the client.

Communication throughout was inconsistent. Calls were missed. Delays were common. Coursework commitments were cited as reasons for unavailability by Terisa. As a client facing serious charges, I do not expect my case to compete with trainee coursework.

Due to poor case management, my matter was adjourned. This prolonged the process unnecessarily and left me in extended physical, emotional and financial stress.

The day before my rearranged court date, at approximately 4:30pm, I received a call from another trainee, Rebecca, informing me that the barrister from my first hearing would no longer be attending and that someone else would be stepping in. This was communicated at the last minute, with no prior discussion, preparation, or reassurance. There was no evident care or strategic planning.

At no point was I properly advised on how I would be questioned in court or how to prepare for cross-examination. I received no meaningful counsel on courtroom strategy. I was left to gather key evidence myself and effectively build my own defence.

Had I relied entirely on the firm’s handling of the case, the outcome would have been severely damaging to my life.

Based on my experience, there was a clear lack of consistent supervision, preparation and accountability. I cannot recommend this firm to anyone facing serious criminal proceedings.

I would recommend avoiding at all costs.

Hesham Puri and his team supported me throughout my complex court case, and I am extremely satisfied with the outcome. They were understanding, transparent at every stage, and provided full support throughout the entire process. I didn’t realise how much I needed MK Law until I met the team.
