I used James Murphy at Gellhorns for a house purchase and also for the transfer of a freehold garage. Both of which I was extremely happy with the service, very good communication throughout, friendly team and competitively priced as I did shop around. Would definitely use them again and recommend them on. Many thanks.

PLEASE AVOID!
Having just completed a house purchase as a first time buyer Gellhorn’s were instructed on the sellers behalf to convey.
They were nothing but shambolic.
My solicitors spent weeks chasing them for answers to basic enquiries to which they seemed unable to answer or were lacking the understanding of basic Conveyancing.
I find it hard to believe that an “established” solicitors such as Gellhorn’s found it so difficult to communicate and respond in a timely and professional manner?
Reading other reviews it is clear that the team at Gellhorn’s are overstretched and quite frankly not bothered.
I could not imagine having them as my solicitor as this would have made the process so more stressful and drawn out.
As you can see they won’t respond to any Google reviews as they obviously don’t care what there customers think.
Please avoid these cowboys like the plague.
Unless you have weeks of your life to spare chasing them for basic emails and enquiries.
And before anybody says “all solicitors are like this” they really aren’t. Our solicitor was fantastic and showed how easy it was to have effective communication and understanding.
Gellhorn’s on the other hand couldn’t care less if they tried.

I am extremely disappointed with the service I received from this solicitor. My house sale was delayed by over six weeks entirely due to their lack of action and communication. Despite repeated attempts to contact them—by email, phone, and even formal complaints—I was met with silence for weeks at a time. Important enquiries from the buyer’s solicitor were left unanswered, putting my sale at serious risk and causing me significant stress and inconvenience.
I was transparent, provided all documentation promptly, and even had to manage key aspects of the process myself because my solicitor was completely unresponsive. The lack of professionalism, accountability, and respect for clients is unacceptable, especially when dealing with such important life transactions.
If you are looking for a proactive and communicative solicitor, I strongly advise you to look elsewhere. This experience has been frustrating and upsetting, and I would not want anyone else to go through the same.

A straightforward probate process ended up taking over two years. Jane cashed in the premium bonds as soon as possible, and the funds have remained in their account for more than 18 months. There was no valid reason to withhold the money from the beneficiaries, and no interest was paid on the funds during this time.
Communication has been extremely poor — for example, I sent an email in January and even visited the office in February to confirm it was received, yet by August, I still hadn’t received a response. When Jane finally got back in touch, she said she was going to send a letter to the Land Registry on my behalf (and cost)to explain that I was upset about the ongoing delays and the impact they were having. However, she never sent the letter because she went on holiday. This is now finally coming to an end (hopefully) because emily has taken over.
This entire situation has made the process unnecessarily long, stressful, and very upsetting — especially during an already difficult time of grief.
I hope that sharing my experience helps prevent someone going through what I have been through.

James and his team managed both the sale and purchase of our move without any problems at all. And even though we were in a chain, the purchaser’s solicitors were a bit over the top, and our new property was in a different county the whole process felt more smooth and efficient than when we purchased our first house three years prior (we used a different solicitor then).
Communication and paperwork was always swift, efficient and polite.
I find selling and buying houses quite stressful, but Gellhorns really made it as pain-free as possible for us. Thank you!
