I had attended court with the intention of representing myself for what I thought was a minor motoring conviction. The court usher approached me and advised there was a solicitor with some space in his day who was offering free advice to anyone the usher believed may need it, I very gratefully accepted. My first thought and before I even met the solicitor was how kind an offer it was, to help people. I then met Baljit, he immediately made me feel at ease, he was professional, measured and empathic. I explained my situation and he took my through my options and explained what would happen during my court session. The explanation gave me the realisation that it was far more serious than I thought, making me feel extremely anxious. I asked Baljit if he could represent me. Despite the short notice and little to no time to prepare he agreed. The original price was outside what I could afford, but Baljit spoke to his manager and given that he didn’t need to travel and was already at the court, they were able to offer me a reduced price, which I could no have been more grateful for. Despite the little to no time to prepare, Baljit done a wonderful job representing me. During the hearing he found a similar case that he attempted to use as a precedent which I was hugely impressed by, however despite his efforts, I was convicted. This is in no way a reflection on Baljit and his capabilities. The prosecutor felt I deserved to be acquitted and the legal advisor also said that on any other day I would’ve been, but the magistrates serving that day are notoriously harsh and it was just bad luck. I have decided to appeal, and I wouldn’t think of asking anyone else to represent me.
