A review from the opposing party — because integrity deserves recognition

I never expected to write a five-star review for a law firm that was representing the other side against me in court.

I am doing so because what I witnessed from JKC Lawyers LLP — and from Mr Miraj Shah in particular — was something I did not think I would see in my lifetime.

I was a litigant in person in a long and difficult family law case. I had no solicitor.

The process had become stuck, communication had broken down, and I had begun to feel that the system was no longer working as it should.

I had come to believe, perhaps unfairly, that what matters to lawyers today is winning — not justice.

Then Mr Shah stepped in personally.

He was not the solicitor on the file. He owed me nothing. He could have let the case continue on its existing course. Instead, he called me directly — more than once — and he listened.

He engaged honestly with what I was telling him. He acknowledged where errors had occurred, took responsibility, and acted swiftly to correct them.

A formal correction was made to the court record. A consent order was reached. Progress was restored on a matter that had been blocked for months.

What struck me most deeply was not his legal skill — it was his humanity. He treated me not as a difficult opponent to be managed, but as a father who loves his children and who deserved to be heard. In the middle of an adversarial process, that is an extraordinary thing.

I have spent years believing that, in this day and age, the law is about winning, not about right and wrong.

Mr Shah made me question that belief. He reminded me that there are still lawyers who understand that their duty to the law is greater than their duty to secure victory for their client at any cost — and who are willing to act on that understanding, even when it is uncomfortable.

My children, Ahmed and Mohammed, have a future with their father because the process was allowed to be corrected and to work as it should.

Mr Shah played a significant part in making that possible.

I did not expect to write these words. I am glad I can.
