This review reflects my own personal experience during family court proceedings.
During my divorce proceedings, I had extensive dealings with Maxwell Hodge, particularly Mr Pratt, who acted for the other party. After I became a litigant in person, I found the litigation difficult to navigate and, in my view, the process became unnecessarily prolonged and adversarial.
One of my main concerns related to financial disclosure. During the proceedings, the other party stated that they were homeless and living on a limited income, while continuing to be represented by a legal team over a prolonged period. As a lay person, I found this difficult to understand and was left with questions about how legal representation was being funded. I appreciate that solicitors have professional and regulatory obligations when accepting instructions and handling client matters, but based on my experience I was not reassured that my concerns about transparency were adequately addressed.
I also found communication throughout the case frustrating. In my experience, emails were often unanswered, documents were served at short notice, and I felt excluded from meaningful engagement with court documentation. As a litigant in person, this made it significantly more difficult to participate effectively in the proceedings.
I strongly dispute allegations of domestic abuse ( domestic Abuse in my opinion should never be used purely for financial gain, I found this distressing that this seems to be accepted in family court without the requirement of any evidence) that were made against me. From my perspective, I was not provided with evidence to support those allegations, and I believe they prevented mediation from remaining a realistic option. In my opinion, this contributed to a more contentious and costly process that also had an impact on my adult children.
I was also concerned that work on the case was undertaken by a legal executive. I questioned whether this was appropriate given the complexity of the proceedings and the applicable legal standards. That concern formed part of my overall dissatisfaction with the way the case was handled.
Following the conclusion of the proceedings, the court made a wasted costs order against Mr Pratt. That order reinforced my own concerns about the way the litigation had been conducted. Anyone reading this review should refer to the court's judgment or order for the precise findings, as I do not wish to misstate them.
The overall experience had a significant impact on my mental health, physical wellbeing, finances and family life. As a litigant in person, I often felt overwhelmed by the process.
Based solely on my personal experience, I would not choose to instruct Maxwell Hodge. I felt there was insufficient regard for transparency, effective communication and the wider impact that prolonged litigation can have on those involved.

After deciding to finally write our wills, we were recommended to Maxwell Hodge, in particular Christine Fazakerley. She was excellent, gave us advice, was courteous and thoroughly professional. We would have no hesitation in recommending her, and Maxwell Hodge - a pleasure to deal with.
