Our experience with Burtons Solicitors has been nothing short of appalling.
Burtons acted on the purchase of our leasehold property in 2022, yet significant defects in the lease were not identified. These issues have since caused our sale to nearly collapse, resulting in months of delays, enormous stress, and thousands of pounds in additional legal costs.
The situation became so serious that the buyer's conveyancer, the freeholder's solicitor, and our own solicitor all agreed that the existing leases needed to be surrendered and replaced entirely. This should have been identified when Burtons acted on our purchase. Instead, we have spent years dealing with the consequences of errors that should never have arisen in the first place.
What made an already difficult situation even worse was Burtons' complete lack of communication and accountability. Emails and phone calls were routinely ignored for days and sometimes weeks at a time. Rather than taking ownership of the problem and working constructively towards a solution, we were left constantly chasing for updates and fighting to get responses.
The amount of time, energy, and money this has cost us is unacceptable. We have incurred substantial additional legal fees and specialist costs simply to correct issues that should have been identified during the original transaction.
Perhaps most concerning was the firm's apparent unwillingness to engage meaningfully with the problem. When a firm's work is called into question, clients should be able to expect prompt communication, transparency, and a genuine effort to put matters right. In our experience, Burtons failed on all three counts.
To make matters worse, the conveyancer responsible for our file, Chris Roberts, was also the firm's Head of Complaints. Despite repeated attempts to seek assistance, our concerns were met with delays, poor communication, and little evidence that the complaint was being handled independently or objectively.
This has been one of the most stressful and frustrating experiences we have ever faced. We placed our trust in Burtons to protect our interests during a property purchase, and years later we are still dealing with the fallout. Based on our experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering using this firm to think very carefully before doing so.
Edit and response - The property was 35 church road, as my partner was your direct client and paid to keep quiet you know full well we cannot raise a complaint. You preposed 5k to “rectify” an issue that cost us far more, with the condition he took no further action on the matter, this was an offer we weren’t in a financial position to turn down. Shame on this company.

We recently worked with Nabilah at Burtons Solicitors to revise our wills and also to implement Lasting Power of Attorney. Everything was completed professionally and fulfilled all of our expectations. We would highly recommend both Nabilah and Burtons. Nothing was too much trouble.

I used Burtons when purchasing my property a couple of years ago and the experience was extremely stressful and poor. The delay in posting a review is due to having to get the Legal Ombudsman involved.
Similar to other reviews here, after engaging Burtons and without any consultation, Burtons switched my assigned solicitor to a paralegal. The service was marked by persistent incorrect advice, disregard for clear client instructions, and mishandling of key aspects of the transaction which put my lending and purchase at risk. On two occasions I escalated my concerns to senior individuals which were not properly dealt with and generally dismissed.
After the engagement ended, I submitted a formal complaint in accordance with Burtons’ own complaints procedure which went completely ignored. I was therefore left with no option but to escalate the matter to the Legal Ombudsman, unnecessarily prolonging the process and adding further stress. The Ombudsman found in my favour on multiple issues. Overall, this was a wholly unacceptable level of service combined with a complete lack of accountability. A shameless company which I would strongly advise to avoid.

Excellent solicitors.
I would highly recommend Burton Solicitors from my experience during a divorce and financial settlement Burton.
Vicky Gallier and Emily Smith were both very professional and helpful during this emotional and stressful period. With a great end result.
Danielle Hemming, my conveyancing solicitor who delt with matters after the court hearings was also very professional in her work.
The Barristers they recommend and work with, I could not have asked for more. They work as a great team together and would use them again when required.

I recently used Burtons Solicitors for a legal matter. I must say Julia Gerke was exemplary. The process was painless, and she always informed me of the changes. She was very responsive to my emails. I highly recommend Burtons. Emily from the Pembury Office was really pleasant and helpful as well.
